The Charter of the European Rural Communities was established in France, in 1989, consisting initially of 12 members, while now it has 27 members. Each country, member of the European Community participates with one Rural Municipality.
The Primary Objectives of the Charter is the cooperation between the different municipalities in order to exchange ideas, opinions and experiences. It also encourages and supports the exchange of citizens and the organization of conferences and meetings, mainly with social, political and educational context.
Another priority of the Charter is the annual organization of meetings with al the Municipalities-Members, where each municipality participates with a delegation of maximum 10 people.
The year 2008, the Lefkara Municipality was in charge of the organization of this meeting, which took place between 14 and 18 of May 2008.
